Its a free online ear training software.

The utility takes you from absolute beginner piano level through to a really high level and trains you to recognize the intervals between notes. The theory is that once you have learned to recognize all of the intervals then you will be able to play any song by ear with out needing to see the music. There are full instructions on the site but for me I spent hours just playing around with the utility. It made me remember my time at the conservatory.

The most important thing for me is that my son has fun with this. The very last thing I want is for him to get bored and think of piano practice as a chore.

I offer to let him play my piano and only let him play if he wants to. So far, he is full of enthusiasm and thinks its a great idea when I offer. I let him play more or less what he wants to. He is experimenting with soft and loud at the moment and though at times un-tuneful he comes up with some pretty dramatic and dynamic musical expression.

As we go I am teaching him how a few melodies, I show him how I play scales and arpeggios (which intrigue him), and how to recognize the notes.

I’ll be posting here on his progress and on any online beginner piano resourses for children I happen to come across

This is great if you are in the area but the point is that you can really advance your playing and boost your confidence as a beginner piano player by attending one of these classes.

If you cannot find one in your area then the current editions of Rocket Piano and Piano For All both have sections on chord playing where in a short time you are taught the essential chords and rhythms to be able to play almost any song with ease. Ideal for all beginner piano players

These can be great and are nearly all a free sample of a complete course that you will need to buy. Taking the free lessons can be a great way to get started however you can easily pick up some bad habits.

I recently happened upon this video at you tube which explains a little about the correct hand position forbeginner piano students. This is an essential piece of advice which many of the free beginner piano courses omit.

As well as this I had to stress the importance of warming up on the piano. Just as athletes have to warm up before they start, so does a piano or keyboard player. If you dont warm up and go straight into playing your pieces then your fingers will most likely start to get knoted and you previous practice will begin to seem as if it has been for nothing. Practicing scales for only 5 or 10 minutes at the start of each practice session will stretch your fingers and wake up your hands enough to go into your practice pieces and exercises with confidence and agility.

The point of this entry is that the person I was talking to asked me about the fingering for the scales. As you will be aware, the correct fingering for scales is very important (especially if you are going to be taking exams). I didn’t have my scale books with me but we found a great site with all of the scales written down and most importantly all of the correct fingering too.
